Letter from the PTA

Dear AV Families, 

The AV PTA would like to take a moment to acknowledge the current turn of events this week. We know it is unexpected and upsetting and causing much disruption in your households.

Spring is always an exciting time at AV with many events such as the All City Track Meet, Talent Show, and Sports Day. As of this newsletter posting, these upcoming events are on a “flexible” schedule. Our intention is to continue to save the dates for these events with the understanding that they may have to be postponed further or cancelled. 

In the meantime, we will keep you posted each Sunday evening as usual. Please stay tuned for updated PTA meeting information, assemblies, events, etc. We appreciate your understanding and we will do our very best to keep you informed as things change. 

Additionally, we will also continue to post community fliers for local organizations and happenings. However, please contact organizations directly for the most up-to-date information.  

During this uncertain time, it is heartening to be a part of this special school community. We are grateful for you and we thank you for your patience and support. 

We hope your families stay safe and in good health. We look so forward to being all together again.

Read Across America Week

To celebrate Read Across America Week, students channeled the whimsical spirit of the beloved Dr. Seuss with silly dress-up days, raffle prize drawings, and guest readers in the classrooms. Thank you to our amazing special guest readers: actor/comedian, Jeff Garlin; actors, Amber and Sam Jaeger; comic book author, David Booher; Mayor Robert Joe; SPPD Sgt. Tony Abdalla; actor, Zack Gold; Occidental College Basketball Coach Brian Newhall; animation producer, Anna States; writer/producer, Koji Sakai,South; LAPD Officer Guzman; South Pasadena FirefightersSPPD Officers; city librarians; and school principals. Thank you Mr. Jehue and his team for the cheerful Seuss-themed chalk illustrations around the campus. Thank you to Mrs. Baydaline and her Ink Drinkers for their performance of Dr. Seuss’s, Sneetches at our RAA assembly.  Thank you to Mr. Fiedler and the Student Counsel representatives for their help with determining popsicle party winners. Thank you to Ecco Hair Studio and Vroman’s Bookstore for their raffle prize donations. And finally, this week-long event would not have been possible without Judy Matsui at the helm and her crew of volunteers: Erik Gammell, Dunia Gill, Aileen Miranda-Chan, and Marty Freeman

All City Track Meet: Save the Date

Registration for the All City Track Meet was originally scheduled to begin next week, March 23. The meet, scheduled for May 8, has not yet been officially cancelled. Our plan going forward is to postpone registration for now in an effort to avoid excessive refunding in the event of a cancellation. We will keep you updated week by week.

Talent Show: Save the Date

Start sharpening your piano skills and tuning your guitars!  AV’s 2020 Talent Show is coming up on May 28. Stay tuned for more information about auditioning. This event depends on many volunteers so contact Stephanie Rigolot or Rob Clyde if you’d like to lend a hand.
