Weekly Wildcat – March 3

Thank You, Mr. Ross!!

After 20+ years with SPUSD and at Arroyo Vista, our Plant Foreman, Mr. Ross, is retiring; his last day will be on Friday March 8th. His dedication to AV will leave a lasting impact not just on the campus itself, but in the culture he demonstrated everyday, including the warm smile with which he could be counted on to greet every student, parent, teacher and staff member. He has always taken great pride in his work to ensure that Arroyo Vista was the most beautiful campus in South Pasadena and we are grateful for his care.  It is staff members like Mr. Ross that help make our AV community so special. In fact, if you ask your student who Whiskers is, their first guess is always Mr. Ross! We hope you’ll be able join us on Friday 3/8 after drop off in the MPR for a coffee and to wish Mr Ross all the best in his well deserved retirement.

Thank you, Mr. Ross, for all your years of service to Arroyo Vista. You will be missed!

Read Across America Week Recap

During Read Across America week, AV students were connected to our community’s love of literature! The lunch pavilion was transformed into Hogwarts from the Harry Potter series, and students saw beloved characters from Elephant and Piggy to Captain Underpants hang around on campus walls. AV’s stage area transported students to Mt. Olympus from the Percy Jackson series, and Garden Alley featured a vignette celebrating Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In addition, chalk artists Mr. Jehue, Kasey Monroe, and Nora Monroe decorated sidewalks full of AV’s favorite book characters!

Mrs. Baydaline compiled book recommendations from the entire AV staff, decorated the library windows with “staff picks” for our students to explore, and encouraged students to post their favorite book titles for their peers. On Friday, members of our community arrived to read books to our students. Former mayors, police officers and firefighters, actors, parents, school board members, AV alumni, and our very own Whiskers were among our special guests. AV’s community of PTA volunteers, parents managing dress up days, teachers and staff, and outside friends of AV joined together with a mutual love of children’s literature to make Read Across America a great week! Thank you to all that made this happen.

Thank you to our AMAZING RAA Week coordinators, Sanly Yuen, Lori Davis Denny, Ananda Abreu, and Hilary Graves for making this a beautiful and educational week!
